Sonar doesn't give you the ability (that I know of) to set a device heiarchy. Whichever one I use becomes my audio device at the moment which is fine, because they are both connected to my sound system. I've got a PODxt and UX2 and I use them both (not at the same time though). While I prefer the EMU, the PodXT onwards (I think it started with the XTs) have a convenient and nifty Re-amping functionality across the USB connection that is useful for recording a dry signal which can then be played back through the pod in a variety of different ways later. The Pods are not useless as soundcards though.

This makes your X3 a potential soundcard as well.

When you installed gearbox you most likely installed soundcard drivers for the POD.

The software package has options to install the sound drivers for a whole range of Line 6 products which it will do by default (ie you need to uncheck boxes if you don't want it to).

So if the POD becomes the soundcard for playback it will be typically be awful as the pod cannot run at effectively at Audio -> Drivers then pick the preferred drivers and restart Sonar.Īs for the Gear Box editor the download that it comes with is NOT just as editor. I cannot speak for the POD X3 but as an audio device the 1212M can run at a much lower latency than the POD XT and the ASIO panel is set appropriately. On occasion when starting Sonar if the POD is on it will occasionally become the ASIO playback device (ie the POD becomes the soundcard in place of the 1212M). I typically use my EMU1212M ASIO as the soundcard but also have a PODxt Live. I do not know why but this happens with me as well. I'm going to ask on the Line 6 forum, but thought I'd try here too. So I'm wondering anyone here knows what might be going on.

I'm also unable to get into the "POD X3 Driver Settings" and "Audio-MIDI Devices" settings in GearBox Preferences: I click the buttons and the mouse hourglasses for a half a second as though it's about to do something, but actually nothing happens. When I uninstall the L6 drivers, things return to normal. And merely having them installed seems to have had some effect on my ability to switch between WMD and ASIO. Note that I'm NOT trying to actually record the X3 through the USB, and so I don't need to use the drivers for that purpose - I have them disabled and only *need* to have them installed so I can use the Gear Box editor (which really expands the usability of the POD and is HUGELY cool, by the way.) But I'd like to be able to have the option. honestly I'm not too up to speed on how all those aspects work and line up. Playback in Sonar will start OK but after some seconds it starts stuttering and actually starts to slow down, with strange pitch effects, as though there is a mismatch between the sample rates or clock speeds or. If the Line 6 drivers are checked and made available to Sonar in Options-Audio-Drivers, they seem to take precedence over my main M-Audio drivers. The thing is, after installing the GB drivers, it seems to have interfered somehow with my ability to use ASIO drivers in Sonar, possibly the WDMs too. I can insert it into a Sonar audio track, and it recognizes that the X3 is attached (the little USB icon stops blinking when the POD is on), but I would need to activate it to get it working. But it also installed the GearBox VST plug in, but in an unactivated state. I thought that I was only installing the standalone GB editor. The L6 driver also shows up as a device in the Record Latency Adjustment field in the Audio Options-Advanced tab.

When I installed Gearbox, I knew it would have to install drivers so that the computer could talk to the POD, but I was a bit surprised to find that it installed audio drivers that are available to Sonar to be used as input and output drivers. Previously I'd only recorded the POD from the hardware outs into my preamp. That was actually the first time I connected the POD through USB and used the Line 6 Monkey utility. I've got a POD X3 and just installed the recently updated GearBox software editor. it's been in the back of my mind to ask about this. Glad to see a thread on using GearBox with Sonar.
